Gymnema is called Gurmar or sugar destroyer in Ayurvedic medicine, and is used to treat glycosuria (sugar in the urine) and diabetes mellitus. Research shows that it increases insulin sensitivity by the beta cells and it is also of benefit for hyperinsulinemia and obesity. The herb is also used as a diuretic, astringent and as a treatment for fevers and colds.
